Revitalizing Small Town America with Remote Work – Rural Outsourcing

An excellent article on the Entrepreneur website, “Outsourced to … America?” discusses a welcome trend, outsourcing to rural America.  According to the article,

“Rural outsourcing’s growth has been skyrocketing over the past several years. Joseph Rottman is an assistant professor of information systems at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, and co-author of “Offshore Outsourcing of IT Work.” He notes, “Demand is through the roof. They’re growing as fast as they can find people to sit in the chairs.””

Whether you employ remote workers, are already a remote worker, or considering remote work as an option, this is a hot trend to watch.  There are several obvious advantages to outsourcing to rural America as opposed to India, China, and other outsourcing hotspots;

  • No language or culture barriers
  • Data security
  • The American legal framework
  • Highly educated workforce with a strong work ethic
  • Same or similar time zone and geographically close
  • Comparable cost to foreign outsourcing when total costs are accounted for

If you are a freelance, contract, or small business remote worker, you can take advantage of this trend by;

  • Becoming a rural remote worker and taking advantage of the cost of living and quality of life
  • Use the advantages listed above to promote your services
  • Sub work out to a rural outsourcer

This is a trend to latch onto.
